- Galveston College has proven to be a progressive, dynamicinstitution of higher education known for its partnerships withbusinesses and organizations and its commitment to provide aquality learning environment that is student-focused. Its programshave consistently gained local, state, and national acclaim inareas that include health occupations programs, workforcedevelopment initiatives, NJCAA athletics, innovative fundraising, ahospitality institute and culinary arts, and special studentservices. For the opening of the College in September 1967, throughthe spring of 1970, the College occupied Moody Hall, a refurbishedorphanage, as its only campus facility. The initial academicofferings were fairly broad in scope, while the occupationalprogram was minimal but with strong offerings in vocationalnursing, office occupations, engineering/drafting and lawenforcement. During the period 1972-76, many new occupationalprograms were added, including offset printing, industrial enginemechanics, refrigeration mechanics, banking, fashion merchandising,office simulation, and a certificate program in hospital unit clerktraining. Added to these was an academic program in cooperativeeducation. In May 1977, the College opened its Fort Crockett campusat which some 600 students received course work in health careprograms, fine arts, physical education and various other creditand adult educational offerings. Since 1977, the College has addedcourses in computer science, child development, human development,television and surgical technology. Also, a grant from the NationalScience Foundation has enabled mathematics and science instructorsto employ the computer as an instructional tool.
